Rheumatology branch; It is the upper branch of internal medicine and accepts patients who have been examined by general internal medicine and who are considered to be diagnosed with rheumatological disease.

General Information:
Rheumatology is the science dealing with rheumatic inflammatory diseases and other musculoskeletal system diseases. Diseases that cause pain and limitation of movement, and sometimes swelling and deformity in the muscles, bones, joints and ligaments connecting these structures that enable our body to move are generally called rheumatism.
Rheumatic diseases are not a single type, and nearly 200 diseases fall into this group. It can manifest itself with very different complaints to the type of rheumatic disease. Rheumatic diseases can affect internal organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, apart from the joints. Apart from this, the skin and eyes can also be affected. Therefore, the complaints are not limited to the joints.
Rheumatic diseases are generally more common in women and their frequency increases with age. However, there are also diseases that are more common in men (gout, ankylosing spondylitis) or predominantly in young people (eg systemic lupus erythematosus).
The exact cause of most of the rheumatic diseases is unknown. Hereditary features (genetic predisposition) are important in some. Preventing external factors such as obesity, which increases the load on the joints, or smoking, which disrupts the vascular structure, is also beneficial for patients with rheumatism.
Some inflammatory rheumatic diseases can affect our skin (redness, rash), internal organs (lung, kidney, brain, etc.) apart from the musculoskeletal system.
As in all health problems, in order to make the most appropriate treatment in rheumatic diseases, it is necessary to establish the correct diagnosis of the disease at the first stage. It may be difficult to diagnose rheumatic diseases, especially in the early period, and the patient may need to be examined and monitored by a specialist for a while. Symptoms of rheumatic diseases may change over time.

The main diseases of interest to rheumatology are:
Rheumatoid arthritis
Ankylosing spondylitis
Psoriatic arthritis
Polymyalgia rheumatica
Systemic lupus erythematosus and all connective tissue diseases
Vasculitides
